Guide & Terminology

What is the Pixel Art Converter?

This tool converts any photo or image into retro-style pixel art. It works by sampling colors from the original image at regular intervals and filling blocks with those sampled colors, creating the characteristic "blocky" look of pixel art.

How to Use

  1. Upload an Image: Drag & drop, click to select, or paste from clipboard (Ctrl+V).
  2. Adjust Block Size: Larger blocks = more pixelated (retro). Smaller blocks = more detail.
  3. Choose a Palette: Restrict colors to classic game palettes (NES, Game Boy) or keep full color.
  4. Toggle Grid: Show grid lines between pixel blocks for a more authentic look.
  5. Download: Save your pixel art as a PNG file.

Color Palettes

  • Full Color: No color restriction — uses averaged colors directly from the source.
  • NES (Famicom): The iconic 56-color palette from the Nintendo Entertainment System.
  • Game Boy: The classic 4-shade green palette.
  • Grayscale: 16 shades of gray for a monochrome look.
  • Pastel: Soft, muted colors for a gentle aesthetic.

Security

All image processing happens directly in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images are never uploaded to any server.
